“This too shall pass,” he whispered as she clung to him with tiny arms.
“This too shall pass,” he repeated and tightened his grip on her.
His left palm met her hair, he tapped lightly, planted a kiss on her forehead and repeated again;
“This too shall pass,” only to realise it was to himself he had been speaking all along.
She was fast asleep, unaware of the storm outside, or of the water rising beyond his ankle. She was in her father’s arm so she was safe, no need fretting over what she couldn’t control.
“This too, shall pass!”
